CRICKET: St. Andrews Finish Zim Tour on a High

St Andrew's College finished off their Zimbabwean Cricket Tour on a high note.

mbulelo The 1st X1 played sound cricket vs. Peterhouse and Churchill. The bowlers dominated up front vs. Peterhouse. Brian Ferguson picked up early wickets and sustained pressure which allowed College to bowl Peterhouse out cheaply. Andrew Rushmere (34*) and Greg King knocked off the runs, College winning by 8 wickets.

The 20/20 fixture was a much tighter contest. College's 116 total was well below par, but they managed to dig deep winning by 2 runs with Zimbawean U19 top order batsman Ryan Burl still at the crease on 57*

On Thursday, the final match  of the Zim leg vs. a mature, energized looking Churchill team produced College's best cricket on tour. Senior opening bowlers, Sintu Manjezi and Chris Ford applied early pressure which was again very ably supported by spinners Andrew Rushmere and Grant Stretton. The Churchill boundary hitting batsman Kaitano (61) and Kunje (71) kept the pressure on the College bowlers throughout their innings, but College remained disciplined, bowling Churchill out in the 49th over for 201 runs. It was going to take a "big play" from some of the College batsman to chase down the total on a day two pitch that was starting to take some turn.

The winning partnership came from Mbulelo Mama and Murray Leith (37) Their 112 run partnership established the solid College innings leading to a win by 6 wickets. Mama's stroke play provided entertainment for the locals and his match winning 91 runs capped off the Zim tour on a positive note for the tour party.

The 1st X1 returned from their Zim / JHB tour with valuable time at the crease and tough sessions in the field. All the players contributed towards a successful team performance. The teams's early loss to Prince Edward in their first fixture generated a fired up response for the remainder of the tour with well-earned wins vs. St George's, St Johns (Harare), Peterhouse, Churchill, The Staggerers X1 and Trinityhouse High School.

Thanks to the commitment and positive contributions from Mr.Jackson and the cricketers St. Andrews can look forward to a great season having honed their skills well in the valuable pre-season tour.
