KZN Schools Cricket- Michaelmas Week

If the end of a bitterly cold KZN winter was not enough to cause excitement, the Michaelmas Cricket Week in Pietermaritzburg will ensure it.The KZN armada consists of DHS, Glenwood, Hilton, Kearsney, St. Charles, Maritzburg College, Westville & Michaelhouse.

Visitors to 'sleepy hollow' include the Johannesburg quartet of St. John's, St. David's, St. Stithian's and KES. Pretoria will provide Affies & Pretoria Boys, whilst Grey Bloem and Hudson Park (of East London) provides welcome provincial diversity.

To single out a few matches would do little justice to the intensely competitive fixture list; however a glance at a few matchups may serve to emphasize how tough a week it will prove to be.

Thursday 24 September: Hilton v Grey Bloem

A few schools produce Springboks, Proteas and Olympic Gold Medalists. What makes Grey College different? They produce them in bulk. They simply do not churn out average athletes.

Whilst Hilton has come off a four wicket loss to a talented Northwood team, there would be no better way to steady the ship than by defeating a powerhouse.

Friday 25 September: Michaelhouse v Affies

The boys from Balgowan stamped their authority on the KZN scene by thumping DHS by 10 wickets. They take this confidence to the Blue Bulls factory that has shown its depth in sporting codes by (relatively) recently producing the likes of AB De Villiers.

Keep an eye out for Hulbert, the Michaelhouse bowler fresh from a fiver against DHS (5-11).

Saturday 26 September: Glenwood High School v Hudson Park

Not much is known of Hudson Park, except that they famously produced the Ndungane twins and consistently holds their own against boys school opposition.

To be the only co-ed school attending the week says much for the esteem in which they are held. The Glenwood Green Machine is in itself a sporting power player and can never be underestimated. The beauty of this encounter lies in its unpredictability.

Sunday 27 September: Maritzburg College v St. Stithians

There is not much that has not been said about College. Their recent 8-wicket demolition of Clifton speaks volumes for their efficiency. St. Stithians will pose a far stiffer test for the men playing on their beloved Goldstones. Fireworks can be well expected.

All fixtures will begin at 09:30 and, should the weather play its part; no better way to spend the third term holidays could possibly be found. The standard of play is only matched by the abundance of choice. Whatever your flavour, the cricket will most certainly prove tantalizing.
