Glenwood Rock College At Goldstones!

Written by  Kurt Donaldson

Glenwood 1st XI travelled to Pietermaritzburg on Saturday to take on Maritzburg College at Goldstones in College's 150th Anniversary Year.

cricket vs college 004After a good win in Johannesburg against Parktown and good week’s preparation the mood in the Glenwood side was positive. Nipho Madwe won the toss and asked College to bat first on a good hard wicket under hot, sunny skies. The first College wicket fell with the score on 22 when Callan Pearce pouched a good catch at 2nd slip off the impressive Andile Phehlukwayo.

The ever-improving Okhuhle Cele further enhanced his growing reputation by removing the dangerous Sohail Mahmoud with a quick yorker and College were 45 for 2. Glenwood captain, Nipho Madwe, bowling in considerable pain because of a back spasm ,epitomised the Glenwood fighting spirit, with 10 outstanding overs capturing 3 for 32.He was superbly backed up by Callan Pearce, Andile Phehlukwayo, Okhuhle Cele and Mickey Hay in bowling College out for 132 in 43 overs. Wicketkeeper Jason Wagener, on debut, produced a fine display behind the stumps and pulled off one of the best stumpings seen on Goldstones in many years.

Glenwood got off to a shaky start being reduced to 8 for 2 but a good steady knock of 35 by Gareth Wissing set things straight. Calla Pearce and Andile Phehlukwayo showed their all-round class with knocks of 27 and 26 and Mickey Hay hit the winning runs for Glenwood in the 30th over to seal a memorable 3 wicket win for Glenwood at College. It was a well deserved win for Glenwood who showed great resolve, passion and a will to win.

Glenwood’s U15 A and U14 A also recorded good victories over College at College, to top off a good day of Cricket for the Green Machine.
