Cricket: Khumalo Sets Up Tight Glenwood T20 Regional Final Win

A fighting 40 from Thamsanqa Khumalo during the Coca Cola Schools T20 Regional Finals against Clifton College at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday, 3 February, set up an eight run win for Glenwood in an exciting but low scoring affair.

Dubbed man of the match, 17 year-old Khumalo showed composure while wickets fell around him. It was the kind of performance that would have him, his coach and the school proud as he ground out a vital, match winning knock in the usually swash-buckling affair that is T20 cricket.

Glenwood High School is a respected cricket institute throughout South Africa and they have produced quite a number of stars which includes two current Hollywoodbets Dolphins players, Mthokozisi Shezi and Andile Phehlukwayo.

A seemingly humble Khumalo was beaming with joy as his team walked away with the title.

Glenwood scored a modest 96/8 in their 20 overs which was enough runs as they restricted Clifton College did just 88/7 wickets in their 20 overs to win by eight runs.

He attributed his performance to their coach, Jarryd Chetty.

“It is a big win for me and as our coach always says that as a team, we always have to believe, always [fight each other], that is what Glenwood is all about and going forth with cricket, I am striving to make KZN U19 this year,” he said.

Glenwood had won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that might not have been justified as they Green Machine battled to 96 in their allotted 20 overs.

In the second innings Glenwood’s captain, Daelen Fynn, who took 3 wickets in the Clifton innings, appeared to be determined to land the killer blow.

Glenwood were not deterred by the strong support their opponents had from their school mates who were chanting war cries throughout the match. Clearly, Clifton had gone all out to ensure that their boys’ morale remained high as the parents and teachers were also present to cheer them on.

Jarryd Chetty, the Glenwood coach, congratulated his boys for the victory they attained and admitted that it was not an easy win.

“I think the Glenwood boys showed a lot of fight today, we started off slowly with the bat, but the boys showed some good spirit with the ball.

“Tactically we were strong and at the end the result came our way, so well done to the boys and well done to everyone involved,” he commented.

KZN Cricket Union will be hosting another Regional Finals for the KZN Inland schools on the 15th of February and then on the 17th Sahara Stadium Kingsmead will host the battle between Glenwood and the Inland winner – the winner of that fixture will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge.

SUMMARY OF RESULT:
Glenwood 96/8 (20) T Khumalo 40 U Mahomed 3/12
Clifton College 88/7 (20) D Fynn 3/22
Glenwood won by 8 runs
