Cricket: Kearsney Clinch T20 Final

Match Report: Hilton vs Kearsney in T20 Final- Hilton College won the toss and put Kearsney in to bat on a good batting surface prepared for the T20 Final held at the Maritzburg Oval last night (Monday). Kearsney came out firing, but lost regular wickets with their gung-ho approach, losing the first wicket on the fourth ball of the innings.

With the score on 50/8 things were not looking good for Kearsney, but partnerships of 21 and 17 for the 9th and 10th wicket allowed the boys from Botha’s Hill to scratch their way to 88 all out, with Patrick McGrath top-scoring with 29. For Hilton, their opening bowlers Ethan Bosch and Tim Coplanar recorded figures of 4-20 and 3-21 respectively.

In reply Hilton adopted a measured approach, with the Kearsney bowlers keeping things tight, Graham Hudson nabbed the first two wickets. Hilton's hopes rested on the shoulders of Gavin Morris and Ethan Bosch, but the pressure began to take its toll and they both succumbed to rash shots. With the score then on 38/5 in the 11th over, the game was in the balance. Hilton continued to lose regular wickets and lost their ninth wicket with the score on 69. With batsmen 10 and 11 at the crease for the last over, requiring 20 to win, the odds were stacked in Kearsney's favour. Graham Hudson kept it tight and, despite a boundary off the last ball of the over, Hilton were 11 short, finishing on 77/9. Kearsney's best bowler was captainBrad Porteous who returned figures of 3-8 in 4 overs with 2 maidens.

On the road to the final, Kearsney beat Clifton College by 93 runs in an emphatic T20 Coastal final at Sahara Kingsmead Stadium, following an excellent semi-final win over Glenwood.
