Cricket: Preview of Matches 27 October,2012

Cricket Preview for 27 October, 2012: The table was rocked last week with what some will say was a shock defeat of Rondebosch by Wynberg and although the result may not have surprised the Wynberg faithful, the manner in which the powerful ‘Bosch team collapsed could not have been expected.

cricket-pitchThe victory catapulted Wynberg to the top of the table but the truth is that there is very little to separate the top teams and at this stage of the season one great result could force a fair bit of movement on the rankings.

This Saturday Wynberg will be facing Bishops who are no pushovers and it will be a tough encounter for both teams. The two sides met earlier in the year with a draw ending up as the result but looking at the opposition that both sides have beaten this year one is forced to believe that Wynberg are going to have to play some serious cricket to beat Bishops. Look out for the young leg-spinner of Wynberg, Dyllan Matthews who spun a web around Rondebosch last week, to be danger man along with Imtiyaas Groenewald. David Beddingham who only just missed out on a century last week will be hoping to get to three figures and along with Nikki Zeeman could provide a strong batting lineup for the Bishop bowlers to challenge. Bishops have no representatives in the WP U19 or U17 [A ed] teams this year but they have a talented all rounder in Digby Harding and Chris Immelman who took 4/29 when the teams last met. They are a committed team who have already beaten Boishaai twice this season and will be looking to cause an upset.

Rondebosch feeling a bit bruised after last week will be determined to get back to winning ways when they face SACS. Home ground advantage will help Rondebosch but with the likes of Alexander Mather, Zubayr Hamza, Dayyaan Galiem, Keagan Smith and Hayes van der Berg, who is fresh off a century, they surely have too much firepower for Bishops. Bryan Vorster and Dawood Christians will lead the fight for SACS but if they can pull off a victory it will be one to remember.

Moving into Gauteng there are several key matches of interest. Affies who are in the process of putting together one of their best seasons take on St.Benedicts. On paper it looks like Affies should enjoy the advantage, they have several sensational players and the likes of Driaan Bruwer, Leus du Plooy and Diaan Vorster will be a formidable force. St. Benedict’s have not enjoyed a great season but they can draw strength that they are one of a few teams who actually have beaten Pretoria Boy’s this year by six wickets so will realise that a victory over Affies is not inconceivable.

Grey College who got fairly comprehensively beaten by Affies last week will take on St.Stithian’s which should be a fair easier task for the Bloemfontein side. Kagiso Rabada of Saints has been in great form this season but this might well be a step too high for the Gauteng side.

KwaZulu-Natal has been affected by rain for four out of the last five weekends and it could well be another wet Saturday, much to the frustration of the players. Yet if the sun decides to shine we could see some very interesting encounters.

DHS will take on Clifton College which could a tight affair. DHS, who can boast of producing more international cricketers than any other school, have a proud tradition to help them and will be expected to hand Clifton a thorough test, especially as they have already beaten Clifton by 149 runs earlier this year. Clifton have been able to beat  Hilton College and Hudson Park this year but will need to take a bigger scalp if they are going to make a serious claim as one of the leading teams in KZN. However Clifton do have their KZN School’s Captain Senuran Muthusamy to rely on who has shown he can turn a match when on song. Yet DHS has some classy players in the form of Taariq Booley, Aatish Maharaj, Bongumusa Makhanya and Tyler Trenoweth who will pose a formidable threat to their neighbours.

Maritzburg College v Westville Boy’s should be epic if the weather allows it. Expect a green top at Goldstones to assist the College pacemen led by Darryn du Pavillon and the up-and-coming Lwandiswa Zuma who is a name to remember. The quicks of College against the classy batting of the two Kyle’s, Sterling and Simmonds will be a great contest.

Looking forward to a great cricketing weekend, may the bowlers get some movement off the track and the batters find the boundaries!
