Basketball: The Latest SA Schools Top 20 Rankings

Maritzburg College reign supreme for yet another week at the top of the SA Schools Top 20 rankings after playing their way into the finals of the St John’s U18 Tournament and then beating St.Alban’s College to take the title.

South African schools BASKETBALL RANKINGS Before the SJC U18 Tournament got underway SA School Sports predicted that Maritzburg College would win the title based purely on the rankings where they occupied the No.1 position going into the tournament. It was a good test on how accurate the rankings are and based on current form few would argue that College are the leading team in South Africa at present.

Let’s not discount the other finalists St. Alban’s, who despite an ordinary start to their season, showed great strength to push Maritzburg College all the way with their young side who would have gained much experience. A better start to the season would have seen them higher up the table at this stage but they are very good value at the moment and we can expect to see plenty more victories for the Saints side and one of the favourites for the 2015 season.

Kearsney College however are the surprise package of the year as they creep into the second spot after coming very close in causing a major upset at St John’s College. Kearsney narrowly were beaten by St Alban’s in the semi-finals but proved to be a tenacious team that have some great defensive structures.
