A highly successful inaugural Independent Schools Stayers Basketball Tournament was held at Kearsney College during the holidays of September 2013.

Twelve schools from around the country participated, playing five pool matches and then cross pool games to determine which independent school had SA’s best emerging basketball team.  St Albans from Pretoria came out tops and host Kearsney was KZN’s best participating team.

The tournament aimed to improve the profile of basketball at independent schools and to foster a closer relationship amongst independent basketball playing schools; as well as improve the standard of basketball at independent schools.

The success of the tournament was borne out by the teams’ indication that they wanted to make it an annual event. The games were played in good spirit and it was evident that teams developed as the tournament progressed.

The final day of competition saw very tough and competitive games take place, as teams battled for a good seeding for next year’s event. St Albans emerged as the strongest team of the tournament, edging out a nuggety and determined St Johns from Johannesburg in an exciting final game.

Top six teams:

  1. St Albans
  2. St Johns
  3. St Stithians
  4. Kearsney College
  5. Michaelhouse
  6. St Benedicts
